To rank for specific keywords, the keyword can be used as the anchor text for the link. Anchor text is the link text that visitors click. For example in marketing resources the anchor text is „marketing resources‟. The more frequently a keyword is used in anchor text the higher a site will rank for that keyword (as long as the keyword matches site content in at least a general way). When using this technique it is preferable that the keyword used be targeted at the destination URL. But that isn‟t entirely necessary as long as the niche is appropriate. For example a marketing site can use anchor text like: affiliate marketing, online marketing, marketing tips or online marketing tips. Have you ever heard of „Google Bombing‟? The classic example of this is credited the a guy called Adam Mathes who placed links on all his sites pointing to a friends site with anchor text (keyword) of talentless hack. This resulted in his friends site being in the number one spot in google for the keyword… even though the site itself did not contain the phrase. The most well known example of this occurred in 2003 when hundreds of people added a link to their sites pointing to President George Bush‟s website using anchor text of miserable failure… same thing, number one spot in google for the keyword until google stepped in an killed it.
